The relationship between family members, even when filled with love, can be volatile. Although police are often asked to intervene during a domestic disturbance, it is often difficult — due to lack of witnesses — to determine the aggressor or even whether violence occurred. Unfortunately, a man in Colorado was recently charged with felony DUI, among other charges, after police received a report of a domestic incident.

Police say the call came in just after midnight on a day in August. According to reports, a caller reported that there was a domestic disturbance in the home, and there was a gun present. While officers were en route, they were reportedly informed that a suspect had left the residence in a sports utility vehicle.

A third call reportedly informed police that an SUV — apparently driven by the domestic violence suspect — had been involved in a crash involving a guardrail and that there was a gun in the vehicle. When police arrived at the scene, they claim that the driver, a 37-year-old man, was attempting to leave the scene but was unable to do so because of the damage the vehicle sustained in the collision. Police say that the man was combative, but they were able to take him into custody. In addition to the felony DUI charge, he is also charged with domestic violence and several misdemeanors.

Because the criminal justice system can be complex, those who are accused of DUI and other criminal charges are unsure of the best way to proceed in addition to being unable to recognize a violation of their rights. As a result, many in Colorado who are accused of a crime seek help from an experienced attorney. With such help, they are often able to make informed decisions about the direction of their case as well as respond to any unfair or unlawful treatment.
